Sometimes a girl just needs a snack. Recently I registered for a coupon for a free Stretch Island Fruit Co. product, and the coupon came and I had no idea what to do with it! I know, that sounds stupid, but here's the thing: their products are all-natural and/or organic, and the thing is... I've pretty much never been in that aisle of the grocery store. It kind of intimidates me. Since I wasn't sure how I wanted to use my free coupon, I kind of held onto it for a while. A few days ago I decided it was time. I was going to brave the organic aisle at the grocery.
The coupon was good for any item up to $3.99 value. After some self-conscious browsing, I found the Fruitabu Smooshed Fruit Flats in the single serving packages and picked one up. Then I wisely looked around and found that they also came in a box of 8 for $3.99! So I obviously chose the box instead of the single (raspberry flavor), and took them home and stared at them. Finally, I opened one and took a bite.
It was good! Actually, it was pretty great! I was surprised at how sweet it was for having no added sweeteners. In fact, the only ingredients are apple puree, raspberry puree, and lemon juice concentrate. I did notice the lack of bright purply-pink color... it was kind of a brownish burgundy color... but then again I am used to snacks with colors that don't exist in nature, like neon orange and electric green. It made me feel better to eat a snack that put nutritional value before color.
If you have kids, this would be a great treat for them, because it is sweet enough that it feels special to eat, but it is still healthy. It's not going to fill you up, that's for sure, but it gives you a shot of something sweet while also giving you a half serving of fruit. There are 40 calories in one flat, no fat, protein, or cholesterol, and 8 grams of sugar.
I know real, actual fruit is always best, but if you need something to throw in a gym bag or keep in the car for cranky, hungry children, these would be a great choice. At $3.99 for a box of 8, it is a little out of our regular budget, but if I could find it on sale with a coupon, I would definitely buy it again. Overall, recommended!
